The book was closed with a sigh, papers sliding apart in a lazy manner before laying flat, filling the air with the must of old words. He glanced towards the clock but it hadn't changed in the last hour. Either the timepiece was dead or those 37 free samples of espresso from that tray that kept passing his table had affected his view of the world.

He paused for a moment to make sure his heart was still beating. Good it was, though at the rate it was going he felt the need to keep his hand over his chest, a second line of defense incase it tried to escape.

Perhaps 37 had been 40 too many, he mused to himself, almost unaware as he pulled a 38th from the tray as it made its rounds again. He sipped it as he mulled over what to do if his heart was to explode from his chest with all the pomp and circumstances of those freaky bastards from aliens. A quick look about assured him Riply wasn't at the cafe. Shame. Sure, he would die when his heart leap from its cage, but his last dying vision would be of that chick killing his caffeine raging heart.

And how awesome would that be?

"You gave me a pet name.." A soft voice sang near his ear, the quiet whispered tones like a slap in the face with bathtub full of water and a dash of radio. He jumped, the chair skidding on the worn pavement with a squeal of protest. To show its distaste, it promptly dumped him on the ground then sat there, pretending it had no idea what happened.

The laughing floated down in soft feathers, gathering in light layers over his back, only to be shook free as she helped him up. "I knew I had one hell of an effect on men, but i would prefer if they didn't try to kill themselves when they hear me. Or at least jump from something taller then a chair."
